Waking up is hard to do, but last Friday, a few early-bird visionaries gathered at The Walters Art Museum for the monthly CreativeMornings Baltimore talk. It’s actually an international event that “celebrates a city’s creative talent, but also promotes an open space to connect with like-minded individuals.” August’s theme was failure, a topic that’s not the most comfortable subject matter to discuss, but a very real aspect of the creative process (and life, in general).

Unlike previous talks, this month’s event included a video, called “Fail Cocktail,” shot by ShineCreative.tv, featuring a panel of local creatives. “It was my truth and I had to own it,” local yoga instructor and writer Camille Bethune-Brown said, reflecting on her failures. Bethune-Brown, visual artist Erin Fitzpatrick, Jamie Campbell of ShineCreative.tv, Chris Attenborough of Attenborough-Naftel, Center Stage dramaturg Gavin Witt joined in on the recorded conversation. The audience watched and listened to personal stories dealing with failure, got more insight of personal failure from guest speaker Chris Attenborough, and then shared their thoughts on the morning conversation with the panelists, as they were also present at the talk for a Q&A session.

This type of candid dialogue and interaction is exactly what CreativeMornings Baltimore host Katie Boyts hoped for when she and Dooby’s restaurant owner Phil Han decided to bring the breakfast lecture to Charm City.

“What I hope comes of these conversations and events is that audience members go forward into their work and their day, whatever work that may be, with renewed energy and a sense of inspiration,” Boyts said, “that they feel more connected to and excited about their peers, their community, their city, and their own creative process.”

So, if you feel in need some morning inspiration, head to Facebook or Twitter for updates on the next CreativeMornings lecture. Can’t wait for the new theme for September. Feel free to set your alarms now.

Check out shots from the morning.
